Where the short hills bloom and community thrives
Summer in Pelham is when the town's natural heart beats strongest. Short Hills Provincial Park — the crown jewel of the Niagara Escarpment — comes alive with lush forests, cascading waterfalls (Swayze Falls and Terrace Creek), and over 20 kilometres of hiking trails. The park's famous Black Walnut, Swayze Falls, and Terrace Creek trails offer everything from gentle family walks to challenging escarpment climbs, with stunning views of the surrounding farmland and Lake Ontario on clear days. The Bruce Trail passes through the park, connecting Pelham to the wider Niagara Escarpment hiking network.
Summer also brings a practical, family-friendly energy. The Pelham Farmers' Market sets up at the Meridian Community Centre (Saturdays, May–October), overflowing with local peaches, cherries, sweet corn, tomatoes, honey, and artisan breads. The Meridian Community Centre runs summer camps, indoor walking programs for hot afternoons, and outdoor sports leagues on its ball diamonds and soccer fields. The Pelham Public Library (Fonthill Branch) hosts summer reading clubs, outdoor storytimes, and maker-space workshops. The Pelham Historical Society offers heritage walking tours of Fonthill and Ridgeville.
Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Short Hills for summer hiking, birdwatching, and photography (the park's old-growth forest and rare ferns are a highlight). Cyclists ride the quiet Twenty Valley back roads, passing orchards, vineyards, and historic barns. The town's summer calendar is packed with events: the Pelham Summer Concert Series in Peace Park, the Fonthill Lions Home & Garden Show, and the Pelhem (Pelham) Heritage Festival celebrating local history. Local wineries along the escarpment — like Megalomaniac, Thirty Bench, and Hidden Bench — open their patios for summer tastings. In Pelham, summer isn't just a season — it's an invitation to hike the escarpment, pick fresh fruit, watch a concert in the park, and savour every long, golden evening in the country.
